Youssef Zalal Leaves Factory X, Eyes New Training Direction
Youssef Zalal Part Ways with Factory X
In a significant shift in his MMA career, Youssef Zalal has announced his departure from Factory X, where he has trained for much of his professional journey. The 30-year-old fighter, known for his dynamic fighting style and strategic acumen, revealed that this decision comes after a challenging bout against former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling at UFC Fight Night 274, which marked the end of his impressive eight-fight winning streak.
Despite the loss not being the sole reason for his exit, Zalal admitted that recent changes in his life and training dynamics prompted him to seek a new environment. "I had a few changes happen, so it's a lot crazier on my side," Zalal shared with MMA Junkie. "I’m still trying to figure it out 100 percent. I’m definitely no longer fighting out of Factory X. Marc Montoya has been nothing but a father figure and a mentor for all my life. When I fight, he'll probably be there, but not in the corner."
The Search for Growth and New Partners
Zalal's pursuit of growth in his fighting career is evident in his decision to explore new training opportunities. He has been spending time with renowned coach Trevor Wittman, a figure known for his work with elite fighters and a reputation for refining striking techniques. Alongside training with UFC lightweight Fares Ziam, Zalal is evaluating this new environment to enhance his skills.
Reflecting on his recent fight, Zalal emphasized the importance of proper preparation and the impact it has on performance. He stated, "The biggest thing is that without the right preparation, I still get to do what I've got to do, and it gives me a lot of confidence. I don’t make excuses. They got that fight at the right time. For me, it was like two weeks of Ramadan, hard training at night, and then cramming everything into three weeks to fight – and it kind of showed in the fight. In the fourth and fifth rounds, I was pretty tired and feeling it a little bit – muscle fatigue and all that stuff."
Despite the setback, Zalal remains optimistic about his future in the octagon. He noted, "But I get to compete against the top four now in the world? For me, it just shows I'm not that far, and that’s what I’m trying to figure out right now with the team to get to that next part."
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter for Zalal
As Youssef Zalal embarks on this new chapter, the implications of his training shift could be profound. He recognizes the need for more focused attention on specific aspects of his fighting, such as striking and technique, which he feels are crucial for his development at this stage of his career.
Zalal acknowledged that factors such as a lack of training partners and evolving coaching dynamics at Factory X contributed to his decision. "I think it's such an evolving game. I’m in a part of my career where I need a lot of attention into some aspects of fighting, not just the regular classes. That’s one of the reasons for my decision – along with personal reasons."
As he transitions away from Factory X, fight enthusiasts will be eager to see how this change affects his performance in the octagon. With a renewed focus on training and the potential for collaboration with Trevor Wittman, Youssef Zalal might be on the brink of a significant resurgence in his fighting career. Fans can look forward to his next appearance, where they will undoubtedly be watching closely for any signs of improvement and adaptation in his game.
