UFC Noche: McMillen and Grasso Shine as Fan Favorites

A Night to Celebrate at UFC Noche

The UFC’s annual Noche event, held on September 12, 2023, at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, was a vibrant tribute to Latino heritage, particularly Mexican Independence Day. The atmosphere was electric as fans filled the venue, eager to support their favorite fighters in an action-packed night featuring 13 bouts. As the main card progressed, two fighters stood out among the crowd: Alexa Grasso and Tommy McMillen, both of whom delivered memorable performances that left the audience buzzing.

Alexa Grasso Captivates the Crowd

Competing in the women’s flyweight division, Alexa Grasso, ranked No. 3, faced off against the formidable No. 2 contender, Manon Fiorot. The fight showcased Grasso's striking prowess, particularly when she landed a powerful punch that sent Fiorot to the canvas in the first round. The crowd erupted with excitement, a testament to Grasso's growing popularity among fans. Despite sustaining some damage, including a cut above her right eye, Grasso displayed resilience and skill throughout the match.

In the end, the judges awarded her a unanimous decision victory, and she celebrated passionately, exclaiming, “Viva Mexico!” Grasso’s performance highlighted not only her boxing skills but also her ability to connect with the audience, solidifying her status as a rising star in the UFC.

Tommy McMillen Delivers an Exciting Performance

Meanwhile, Tommy McMillen, a featherweight fighter representing Peoria, also made a significant impact during the event. His match against Morocco’s Marwan Rahiki turned out to be the most entertaining bout of the night. Walking to the octagon with an air of confidence, sporting dark sunglasses and accompanied by the energetic tune of Motley Crue's “Girls Girls Girls,” McMillen quickly captured the crowd’s attention.

The fight was a back-and-forth affair, with McMillen opening a cut under Rahiki's eye in the first round. However, Rahiki retaliated and landed some strong punches that momentarily staggered McMillen. The tension escalated in the final round, with the audience on their feet, cheering for both fighters. In a display of endurance and technique, McMillen closed the fight stronger and was awarded a unanimous decision, much to the delight of the crowd.

Brandon Moreno and Other Notable Fights

Brandon Moreno, the first Mexican-born UFC champion, also made an appearance on the Noche card. His fight against Joseph Morales was less electrifying, and despite a split-decision victory, the crowd's enthusiasm for Moreno seemed muted compared to his previous performances. Moreno acknowledged the support but felt he could have done more during the fight, stating, "I should have thrown a few more punches."

In another highlight, Jose Miguel Delgado, a local fighter training out of the renowned MMA Lab in Phoenix, faced off against No. 6 featherweight contender Jean Silva. After a promising start, Delgado succumbed to Silva’s submission skills in the third round, marking a disappointing end to his co-main event opportunity.

The heavyweight matchup between Waldo Cortes Acosta and Curtis Blaydes drew mixed reactions, with the fight failing to deliver the anticipated excitement, leading to boos from the audience. Additionally, Drakkar Klose faced Tommy Gantt in a lackluster bout that ended with Gantt winning by submission, further disappointing fans.
