Roberto Satoshi Excited for RIZIN and PFL Co-Promotion Opportunities

RIZIN and PFL: A New Era for MMA

Roberto Satoshi, the former RIZIN lightweight champion, is enthusiastic about the new collaboration between RIZIN Fighting Federation and the Professional Fighters League (PFL). This partnership is set to create exciting matchups, especially with the upcoming unification of the featherweight title, where A.J. McKee will face Razhabali Shaydullaev at Super RIZIN 5. Satoshi believes that this co-promotion could pave the way for significant fights on North American soil, bringing together fighters from both promotions in ways that have rarely been seen in mixed martial arts.

Dream Fights on the Horizon

As the PFL and RIZIN merge their featherweight divisions, the anticipation for potential matchups grows. Satoshi, who is scheduled to compete against Shunta Nomura on September 10 in Osaka, is eager to reclaim the title he once held and eyeing contests against notable PFL fighters such as Usman Nurmagomedov, Paul Hughes, Alexandr Shabliy, and Gadzhi Rabadanov.

Satoshi expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "It’s really cool when you stop and think about the fact that RIZIN is doing something no other promotion has done. Bringing two promotions together in this manner is quite rare, especially compared to boxing, where we often see champions from different organizations face off. This partnership allows us to see matchups we've always dreamed about, and it’s beneficial for the fighters, the promotions, and the fans alike."

Shinya Aoki's Return and Legacy

A notable fighter making a comeback at this event is Shinya Aoki, who returns to RIZIN after an absence of 11 years, having previously competed under ONE Championship. Satoshi acknowledges the long-standing interest in a potential matchup with Aoki, highlighting how their paths crossed when he held the RIZIN belt and Aoki was the champion in ONE.

"Aoki is a legend in Japanese MMA, and while he may have had some setbacks, his grappling skills remain top-notch," Satoshi commented. He emphasized the significance of Aoki’s contributions to the sport and the potential for an exciting grappling matchup, whether under MMA rules or otherwise.

Satoshi vs. Nomura: A Title Eliminator?

Satoshi's upcoming bout against Shunta Nomura is particularly crucial, especially considering Nomura's victory over current RIZIN champion Luiz Gustavo. This matchup is seen as a pivotal encounter, potentially serving as a title eliminator for the lightweight championship. Satoshi noted that this will be the third time RIZIN has paired them, allowing him ample opportunity to devise a winning strategy.

"I’ve been studying him for a long time. He has a tricky style with his karate background and fast movement," Satoshi explained. "This fight is not just about grappling; I’ve been focusing on my striking as well. I believe we can create an engaging contest, rather than a typical striker vs. grappler scenario."

Looking Ahead: The Path to the Title

As Satoshi prepares for this critical fight, he realizes its importance in solidifying his standing in the lightweight division. He stated, "Winning this fight could significantly enhance my chances of getting a title shot. This match is essential for me to show that I still have what it takes to compete at the highest level and make another run for the belt."

The stakes are high for both fighters, with a victory likely leading to a future title opportunity against Luiz Gustavo. As the MMA community eagerly awaits the outcome of this bout, fans are left to ponder the exciting matchups that may arise from this new era of co-promotion, heralding a promising future for mixed martial arts in Japan and beyond.
