Lucero Acosta Discusses Combate Global Split Before PFL Debut
Lucero Acosta opens up about her departure from Combate Global ahead of her PFL debut this Friday.

Acosta's Combate Global Departure
Lucero Acosta, a prominent Mexican flyweight fighter, is set to make her PFL debut this Friday against Shannon Clark in Chicago. Acosta's departure from Combate Global has been a topic of discussion, especially given the promotion's recent struggles with event scheduling and fighter inactivity. After joining Combate in 2019, Acosta found herself sidelined for long periods, ultimately leading to her exit from the promotion earlier this year.
In May, Acosta announced her departure from Combate, expressing relief but also frustration over missed opportunities. She cited issues related to her contract, which prevented her from competing in other sports due to exclusivity clauses. "Finally, my contract has ended with a company that didn't give me a chance to fight," she stated, highlighting the challenges she faced during her time with the promotion.
Combate's Recent History
Combate Global has faced significant challenges, including a lack of events and fighter inactivity. After a stretch without events from July 2024 to March 2025, the promotion briefly returned with six shows in six months, only to face another hiatus. Despite attempts to revive the promotion, Combate has canceled several planned events in recent months. As of now, Combate is scheduled to return on October 22, with three shows planned for November.
Acosta's situation is not unique; other fighters have also experienced inactivity under Combate. Maritza Sanchez, who fought Acosta in the past, found herself sidelined for 15 months due to similar issues. Acosta fought only once in two and a half years, which contributed to her decision to speak out about her frustrations.
Transition to PFL
Acosta's transition to PFL comes after her contract with Combate included a one-year matching clause upon expiration. She received an offer from PFL for a six-fight, two-year deal that Combate could not match. Acosta noted that Combate was reluctant to release her, but ultimately had no choice due to the financial terms of the PFL offer.
Reflecting on her time with Combate, Acosta acknowledged the support she received but emphasized the importance of being active in the sport. "They didn't pay me to sit down; they paid me to fight," she said. Despite the challenges, she enters her PFL debut on a four-fight win streak and is looking forward to maximizing her activity over the next two years.
Acosta expressed her desire to fight three times a year under her new contract, embracing the opportunity for a fresh start. While she has moved on from Combate, she maintains a positive outlook on her experiences there, stating, "It was an experience. There's no grudge. We helped each other out. It's a learning experience, and I'm moving forward."
