Islam Makhachev Says Next Fight Could Be Among His Last
Islam Makhachev says his next fight will be one of the final bouts of his career and wants to face the winner of Michael Morales vs. Carlos Prates.

Islam Makhachev says his next fight will be one of the final bouts of his career, according to a post on his verified social media accounts on Saturday. The UFC welterweight champion wants to face the winner of Michael Morales vs. Carlos Prates, who are scheduled to meet for an interim title at UFC 336.
Makhachev targets the UFC 336 winner
Makhachev said he wants to take on whichever contender emerges from the Morales-Prates matchup. He addressed talk that Prates is too dangerous for him and Morales is too good, saying he wants to meet the best of the two and show he is the best in the sport.
Makhachev has not been included in the UFC 336 matchup. He was previously expected to face Prates, but the promotion announced Morales against Prates instead. Makhachev is not expected to fight until after Ramadan, according to the report.
The champion last competed in August, when he defeated Ian Machado Garry. His next opponent has not been confirmed; a fight with the Morales-Prates winner is the apparent route described in the report, rather than an announced booking.
Makhachev leaves retirement timing open
The 35-year-old’s wording points to retirement after his next appearance, but does not rule out competing again. Makhachev is 29-1 and has followed the career path of teammate and coach Khabib Nurmagomedov, who retired with an undefeated 27-0 record.
Makhachev holds the UFC record for lightweight title defenses, with four, and has defended his welterweight belt once. The source also notes Dana White has not appeared pleased with the champion’s activity level, though it does not establish why Makhachev has been out of action.
