Canelo Alvarez Lists His Top Five Mexican Fighters

Canelo's Top Five Mexican Fighters

Canelo Alvarez has shared his list of the five greatest Mexican boxers in history, stating he feels he does not belong among them. While many consider Alvarez a boxing great himself, he ranks Julio Cesar Chavez, Gilberto Roman, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, and Salvador Sanchez as the top five. He named Chavez first, recognizing him as a legendary figure in Mexican boxing with an impressive career.

The Legacy of Mexican Boxing Legends

Chavez is celebrated for his three-division championship titles and a long career that included 115 fights. Roman and Sanchez both had their reigns tragically cut short due to fatal accidents. Sanchez was known for defending his featherweight title against notable opponents before his untimely death at 23, while Roman was a two-time WBC champion in the super-flyweight division during the late 1980s.

Canelo's Upcoming Fight

Canelo Alvarez, now 36, is preparing to reclaim his WBC title after losing to Terence Crawford in September 2025. He will face current super-middleweight champion Christian Mbilli on October 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A victory could lead Alvarez to pursue three or four more fights before considering retirement.
