Alex Pereira Prefers Not to Have Herb Dean as Referee

Criticism of Herb Dean

UFC referee Herb Dean has faced significant criticism from fans at recent events, with many booing his appearances on arena screens and broadcasts. This backlash has intensified since Alex Pereira publicly criticized Dean following his interim heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250 in June. Pereira accused Dean of mishandling a controversial incident where Gane struck him in the back of the head after a knockdown, which Pereira believes warranted a disqualification.

Pereira's Mixed Feelings

While Pereira acknowledges the backlash Dean is experiencing, he expresses mixed feelings about the situation. He stated that although he feels some sympathy for Dean, he stands by his decision to speak out, emphasizing the importance of fighter safety. Pereira conveyed that Dean's role is crucial in protecting fighters from unnecessary harm, and he felt compelled to voice his concerns. Despite his sympathy, Pereira made it clear that he would prefer not to have Dean officiate his future fights if given the choice.

Upcoming Fight and Frustrations

Pereira is currently preparing for a fight against Sergei Pavlovich, scheduled for December 12 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He also expressed frustration regarding the UFC's handling of his fight options following his bout with Gane. Pereira had hoped for a rematch with Gane or a fight against Josh Hokit, but neither opportunity materialized. He understands that the UFC is following his contract terms but feels disappointed by the lack of communication regarding potential matchups.

Pereira's upcoming fight with Pavlovich is set, but his frustrations over recent events remain evident.
